I am a SFINCS2 judge!

SFINCS (affectionately referred to as BABYBO) is the Speculative Fiction Indie Novella Championship! It is modelled after SPFBO (Self Published Fantasy Blog-Off) but is the smol version--taking only 100 entries and limiting the word count of each to 40,000 words. Entries can fall into any genre under the speculative fiction umbrella--fantasy, sci fi, horror, etc--and can be standalone stories or tied to a larger series of works as long as they are the first in that series. The 100 entries have been split among 5 judging teams for the first round.

In this, the second year of the competition, I am a judge for Team Bookend Elves, which is headed by Armanis Ar-Feinial and also includes a Jamedi, a Rebecca, and a Steve Westenra :D. The other judging teams can be found on the competition website.

I have been assigned 8 novellas for the first round, but my intention will be to read as many of our initial 20 as possible! I expect to read 100% of every entry I judge since novellas are quick and I don't want to miss any moments of brilliance even if the openings don't seem like they'll work for me.

I like all genres of speculative fiction and do not have a strict "type" of book I read. I've fallen in love with the novella form over the last few years and deeply enjoy reading and writing them! :D

Because I left this so late to post, I have already read all 8 novellas from my allotment, and the only reason I haven't read more is because I can't very well keep going without getting the reviews in gear, can I???

My assigned novellas, in the order I read them, are as follows:

The View From Here

 by Leon Stevens

Get Free

by Mark Robinson

Rebecca and the Grinning Worm

by Gareth Barsby

Magic in the Mud Show

by Nick Wisseman

Flight of the Necromancer

by Luís Falcão Magalhães

The Sound of Starfall

by Scott Palmer

Space Ants: Never Say Die Collection

by Eric Kay

A Journey to Power

by Marie-Hélène Lebeault

Hopefully I will be able to start posting these reviews soon!

Note: our team will be using the CAWPILE rating system to add some structure to our eventual rankings, but my personal reviews will not contain scores.
